THE SAME PEOPLE WHO CALLED FOR THE BOYCOTT OF ARUBA ARE STILL CALLING FOR THE BOYCOTT OF ARUBA
At this point, given recent events, it is worth looking back to the original appeal that Beth Twitty made. I am sure that she had a purpose in asking people to avoid ALL of the Netherlands Antilles. The common factor being the Dutch rule. By "Netherlands Antilles," I'm not splitting hairs about the constitutional status of this island vs. that island, as some like to do: I'm talking about the chain of islands known widely as the Netherlands Antilles.
Check the U.S. Department of State Web site: in discussing the human trafficking situation in the Caribbean, it includes Aruba and other islands in the Netherlands Antilles.

It says from one million to two million people each year become victims of human trafficking, with some 100,000 of them in the Latin America/Caribbean region alone. The women generally wind up as forced sexual slaves.)
We know that Amy Bradley in March 1998 vanished from a cruise ship docked at Curacao. This happened the day after crew members asked to take her to Carlos 'n' Charlies ... in Aruba. The same one where Natalee was last seen.
Chalk up another one for the Netherlands Antilles.
We know that in December of 2006 a New Jersey man named Joel Gove vanished on Saba Island during the last day of his visit (again, like Natalee). Why the media let such cases slip out of their focus is beyond me ... but the last I knew, his family were convinced they knew where his body was, but were trying to raise money for a private search because the locals and the Dutch overlords couldn't be bothered with doing their job.
Chalk up another one for the Netherlands Antilles.
Many more cases ... but why bother? Why list here all the crimes that have been mentioned on Aruba alone? Why slam the reader over the head time and time again?
Justification for heeding Beth's call goes beyond Natalee. Her tragedy is what set off the spark in the tinder, so to speak, and has produced a conflagration that I hope will not be put out while tourists continue to put themselves at risk in the corrupt Dutch territories.
The White House apparently is concerned about spreading terrorism in the Caribbean.
Nothing new there, either. The terrorists that have assailed us have been running the show; the inmates are in charge of the asylum. Let's start protecting our own interests.
We owe nothing to anybody in the Caribbean. But they owe to us an accounting for the grief and suffering inflicted on certain of our families. The note is past due; make them pay.
